Renovos, a regenerative medicine company, is pioneering a nanoclay gel technology platform, RENOVITE®, at the forefront of innovation for medical applications to address the unmet need for long-term tissue regeneration, offering safer, more economic clinical solutions for health systems, and better outcomes for patients. We develop novel formulations, manufacture and test nanoclay materials to be used in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. Our RENOVITE® BMP-2 product indicated for spinal fusion has been granted a Breakthrough Device Designation by the FDA. We are increasing our range of R&D projects based on the nanoclay platform, and are looking to start to operate to ISO 13485:2016 medical device quality standards. Our lab is based at the Southampton Science Park and we collaborate closely with the University of Southampton at the General Hospital site. We are looking to recruit exceptional scientists in R&D to take our exciting patented technology forward, wanting to work in an environment that values creativity and discovery.

The Role

We are seeking to recruit a talented, passionate, enthusiastic R&D Chemist to join our team. You will be a pivotal part of a growing and dynamic environment, initially reporting directly to CEO, and will need a strong ability to adapt to new challenges and push boundaries. The work will be heavily production and product development oriented, encompassing all areas from performance, validation and regulatory  compliance, manufacturing and through to packaging, and you will be working closely with our scientific leads. You should be prepared to be able to think creatively and outside the box. You will operate a wide range of laboratory and testing equipment, develop and follow SOPs, and keep accurate records of all work undertaken. A degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering is required, and inorganic synthesis and experience of working with clays is preferred. The role will involve production of synthetic clay and tech transfer to clean room manufacture, quality control (QC), further development, including improvements in quality, quantity and efficiency of manufacturing of RENOVITE® nanoclay for medical applications. You will be a pivotal part of a growing dynamic company and team, and opportunities to grow and develop beyond this role will be offered depending on your abilities and interests.

Your main duties will be:

  • Formulation and development of new clay products
  • Prepare samples for projects and collaborators
  • Independently plan and execute technical projects and work programmes
  • Lead and deliver work with range of collaborators and partners
  • Perform quality testing on samples, investigate potential problems and quality concerns
  • Perform process improvement actions
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation, work to and maintain quality standards
  • Ensure the management team and appropriate team members are aware of issues or potential issues in a timely manner
  • Problem solve technical issues independently, presenting possible solutions to management.
  • Work with the wider technical team to ensure the efficient and meticulous organisation of the laboratory
  • Develop and maintain awareness in relevant technical fields, keeping up to date with trends
  • Laboratory management, maintaining equipment, maintaining calibration, ordering reagents, and carrying out stock checks
  • Carry out proof of concept scale-up manufacturing work, and work with third party suppliers for bespoke manufacturing equipment

Your Background

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

  • Degree in chemistry or chemical engineering with demonstrable experience in independent project work
  • Experience and an interest in biological applications, including orthopaedics
  • Experience in the chemical industry and/or inorganic synthesis preferred
  • Significant experience spent within an analytical environment and competent with a broad range of techniques including rheology, TEM, SAXS, elemental analysis and zeta potential
  • Experience in exploring and setting up new analysis protocols
  • An understanding of method development & validation
  • Attention to detail with a methodical approach
  • Enthusiastic, “can-do” attitude, resilient to set backs and a strong problem solver
  • Ability to work independently and feedback to a small team towards a common goal
  • Accountability for own of work
  • IT proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and strong communication skills
