Experienced management team founds therapeutics company within the Oxford BioCluster
(25th July, Oxford) Founded in July 2008, Adaptimmune is focused on the use of T cell therapy to treat cancer and infectious disease. It aims to utilise the body’s own machinery – the T cell – to target and destroy cancerous or infected cells. Adaptimmune’s mission is to take so-called “adoptive T cell therapy” to the next level by leveraging its expertise in engineering high affinity T cell receptor proteins (TCRs) as a means of “supercharging” the strength of patient T cell responses. Adaptimmune holds an exclusive licence to the use of MediGene Ltd’s unique T cell receptor engineering technology for adoptive T cell therapy. It is aiming to exploit this unique capability in the development of targeted T cell therapy in cancer and infectious disease.
Backed by private investors and incubated within MediGene Ltd’s Oxford facilities, Adaptimmune operates a virtual business model with a small, focused management team and strong academic collaborations for the conduct of research, preclinical and clinical studies in HIV and cancer.
That management team includes, James Noble, CEO, the former CEO of Avidex Ltd has a wealth of prior experience in the international biotech community. James also sits as a non-executive director on the Boards of GW Pharmaceuticals plc and Evolve Capital plc (both listed on AIM) and of Curagen Corporation (listed on NASDAQ) plus privately held Axellis Limited. James is supported by CSO Dr Bent Jakobsen, the former founder of Avidex Ltd and inventor of the increased affinity TCR engineering platform, providing him with unique knowledge and experience on the capability of transforming T cells with increased affinity TCRs for cellular therapy. The day-to-day running of Adaptimmune is the responsibility of COO Dr Helen Tayton-Martin, who has a PhD in molecular immunology, an MBA from London Business School and 15 years of experience working within the Pharma, biotech and consulting environment in disciplines across preclinical and clinical development, Helen joined Adaptimmune from Avidex/MediGene Ltd where she was responsible for commercial development of the increased affinity TCR engineering programme in cancer and HIV therapy.
