Prof Derek Terrar, Director, Oxford Cardiac Pharmacology Ltd

Company Profile - OCP Ltd

Oxford Cardiac Pharmacology Limited (OCP Ltd) provides novel methods for assessing the cardiac risk of new drugs.

There are a number of important reasons why cardiac risk should be assessed for any new drug whatever its intended target in the body.  Firstly, it would be unethical to give a new compound to healthy volunteers without having assessed this risk; secondly, regulatory authorities in the USA, Europe and Japan insist that this is done; and thirdly it makes good commercial sense to reduce costs by reducing development failures and product withdrawals.

Most pharmaceutical and biotech companies out-source this specialist toxicity testing and the few that have some in-house capabilities often need to access external expertise. OCP works in partnership with its clients to provide a tailored package of service delivery and consulting to complement each partner???s capabilities and needs.  We are at the forefront of development of new techniques to assess cardiac risk and offer our clients the benefits of this specialist knowledge.

Clients are taking a more strategic approach to out-sourcing to reduce development time and cost.  In response we are developing partnerships with other organisations to help clients achieve these goals.

Through our unique specialist knowledge OCP will continue to be at the forefront of developments in the understanding of cardiac toxicity.  The company will develop and grow to satisfy customers??? business and out-sourcing needs.

Biography - Prof Derek Terrar

Prof Derek Terrar is the Founder and Director of Research at Oxford Cardiac Pharmacology Ltd (OCP) and Professor of Cardiac Electrophysiology at Oxford University. He is one of the world???s leading authorities on the testing of the influence of drugs on cardiac muscle. He acts as an advisor to a number of companies and works closely with OCP???s clients to develop research and testing strategies.

Prof Terrar also carries out world leading research providing new insights concerning the origin and regulation of pacemaker activity of the sino-atrial node, and on the actions of novel inotropic and antiarrhythmic drugs that are based on newly discovered endogenous compounds, including cADP-ribose and related compounds.
